Things to do in Japan this time around （今度日本でしたい事）

Well all, it's about 2 weeks until I depart.
I've learned a lot about my living situation and have spoken with people from my town's board of education, but I think I'll just save those details for when they come up in future weeks.  For now, here's a quick list of some of my goals while I'm in Japan.

さて、皆さん。二週間過ぎたら出発しますよね。
最近、教育委員会の人と話していて、いっぱい知らせてくれたけど、その詳細は後で書こうと思っています。一応今日は「今度日本でしたいこと」を書きます。

Sundries （雑貨）

This week I got a few things done.

今週は色々なことができました。

I got my international driving permit!  (Only valid for one year.  After one year, I have to get a Japanese license to keep driving)

国際運転免許書をもらった！（有効期間は一年間に限られているから、一年間過ぎたら日本の運転免許をもらわなくちゃいけません。）

I look so happy, don't I? 嬉しそうね。*皮肉*

I received some tourist maps of places I want to travel in Japan.  I really want to go to the snow festival in Sapporo!

いくつかの行きたい所のパンフレットが届きました。さっぽろ雪まつりへ行きたいなぁ！

Aaaaaaaaand I bought some stuff for my future classes, like stickers, flashcards, and some paper decorations of US landmarks and farm animals.  I particularly like the animal flashcards but I hope the English descriptions on the back aren't too hard for middle schoolers.

それで英語の授業のための物を買いました（シール、フラッシュカード、アメリカの農場の動物と史跡などの紙のデコレーション）。特に動物のフラッシュカードは気に入っているけど、中学生には難しすぎないといいですね。

I wonder what other stuff I should bring to Japan to use in the classroom.  I was told it would be nice to bring stuff relating to your home town or home country, ....maybe I should just print out some photos, or get some postcards...

他の物は何を持って行けばいいのかな。よくALTたちは出身からのものを授業で見せて発表すると言われましたが…写真か絵葉書でもいいのかな。

Using my free time （暇な時間を利用すること）

I have been trying to make the most of my free time before I go to Japan by...
日本へ行く前の暇な時間をうまく利用するための活動…

1. Exercising (running, weights, walking the dogs)
   運動　（走ったり、重量挙げたり、犬と散歩したりすること）
2. Studying Japanese (N2 kanji and vocab)
   日本語を勉強する（N2漢字と単語）
3. Practicing cooking stuff!
   料理を練習！

I used to run almost every day back in high school and I've tried repeatedly to get back into it.  I find it hard to stay motivated lately and I get injured easily (my knees aren't very good), but I'm trying to ease back into it.  I've been running a slow two miles almost every day this week, so I'm going to work up from there!  This is kind of crazy, but I thought I might sign up to run the Tokyo Marathon to keep myself motivated.  Who knows, maybe it'll work!

高校生の時、毎日走ってたんですが、最近もっと走るようにしています。気合を入れるのがなかなか難しくて、よくけがをしますが、少しずつ頑張ります。今週は毎日２マイルぐらい遅く走りましたから、まぁ、そこからいけますね。ちょっと変なアイデアかもしれないけど、東京マラソンを目指して登録しようと思っています。やる気になるかなー！

My mom is a really talented cook so I've asked her to impart some of her cooking knowledge on me before I'm off to Japan.  We've been trying to cook with ingredients I'll be able to find in Japan.  Today, we made shiitake mushroom and wakame soup, and simmered kabucha!

お母さんは料理がすごく上手だから、日本へ行く前に少しだけその知識を与えてくれることを頼みました。日本でもらえる物を使うようにしています。今日、椎茸とわかめスープとかぼちゃの料理をしました。

Kabocha is a kind of squash and is sometimes called "Japanese pumpkin."  It doesn't really taste like pumpkin, though.

かぼしゃはスカッシュの種類で、アメリカで時々「ジャパニーズ・パンプキン」と呼ばれています。別にパンプキンの味をしないけどね。

Thoughts （感想）

I'll be trying to update this blog about once a week, so here's a short entry!

So I've been in contact with my predecessor a bit, and I've learned a good bit about my future job.  One thing in particular I've been thinking about today is who I apparently get to teach: junior high every day, elementary one day a week, and kindergarten one day a week.

I was playing with my kindergarten-age cousins today and thinking how much fun it's going to be. I really do love playing with little kids.

I also learned that my house (yes, house, not apartment!) that I will probably be living in in Nanmoku is only 10,000 yen a month for rent and is a two minute walk from school.  That's a little inconvenient for shopping's sake, but I can't complain about the commute or the cost!  So all in all, I'm very happy with that.

このブログは一週間に一回ぐらいアップデートするようにしたいので、今日短い日記を書きま～す。

今年南牧村で教えているALTさんと少し話していると、色々私の仕事についてもうちょっとわかる様になりました。今日一つ考えているのは誰に教えることです。毎日中学校へ行って、水曜日は小学校で、金曜日は幼稚園へ行くことになっているんだそうです。

それで今日、園児のいとこと遊んでから、子供と遊ぶのが本当に好きだなと思っていました。楽しみにしています。＾＾

今のALTさんは家のことについてもちょっと教えてくれました。（アパートじゃなくて、家！！）家賃は一ヶ月１万円だそうで、学校まで２分ぐらいかかります。いいなぁ！買い物はちょっと不便だが、その家賃だと構いません！

Placement! （勤務先！）

I finally got my placement today!

It's a small mountain town called Nanmoku-mura in Gunma Prefecture.  It is a very small town of only around 2,200 residents, but it looks very beautiful.  I can't wait to see it in person!

(Every time I type Gunma I almost type Gundam, heh heh)

I love the mountains and nature so I'm generally very excited about this, but I kind of hope my actual apartment is in the slightly larger town 20 minutes away, for shopping convenience's sake.

I have a feeling I'm going to become friends with lots of cute old ladies.

今日はやっと勤務先のインフォが届きました！

群馬県の南牧村です！とても小さい山の中の村です。人口は僅かな２０００人ぐらいですが、とても美しい所に見えます。

（ところで、英語で「Gunma」とタイプしようとするときはいつも「Gundam」とタイプしてしまうｗｗ）

山と自然が大好きですから、楽しみにしています。グーグルマップによると、南牧村から20分ほど運転したらもう少し大きい町(人口10,000人ぐらい）があるので、アパートはそこで、もうちょっと便利だといいなと思っています。

可愛いお婆ちゃんと友達になれる様な気がします。ｗｗ

Paperwork (書類)

Today I finally sent off all my paperwork-- reply form confirming that I accept the position as an ALT, health form, and copies of my passport, FBI background check, and IRS forms. (Now I'm thinking this is kind of boring stuff to talk about but I wanted to update this blog...!)

It's definitely a weight off my shoulders.

Now the waiting game recommences until I hear back about where I will be placed.

I'll update as soon as I find out.

今日やっとジェットの書類を送り出した：ALTの仕事をとる事の確認、医者の書類、パスポート、FBIの書類、IRSの書類のコピー等。（この話はちょっと詰まらないかもね。（笑）けどこれをアップデートしたかった～）

肩から重さをやっと落としたような感じだな。（それは確かに英語の言い方だが日本語の似てるフレーズは知らない。どうかな。）

The second coming of Genevieve / ジェネヴィーヴの再来

It's official.  I have been short-listed as an ALT for the JET program.  In other words, as long as I get all my paperwork in on time, I'm going back to Japan for at least a year.

And boy, is there a lot of paperwork.

I'm getting fingerprinted for my background check on Monday.  I'm really nervous because I've heard stories of people with cracked hands getting their fingerprints rejected by the FBI.  My hands aren't exactly in perfect condition...

Since I get asked this a lot, I won't find out where I will be placed until May, after all my paperwork is in.  For placement requests, I put Aichi prefecture (because I love Nagoya), Gunma prefecture  (I figure since I have some friends who originated from there it can't be that bad of a place, and it's only one prefecture away from Tokyo prefecture), and Hiroshima prefecture (I'm a bit of a history buff, and I'd like the opportunity to visit southern Japan).  That being said, there is absolutely no guarantee that I will be placed where I requested.  I've actually heard it is fairly random.

Right now I'm worrying about saving up money for the initial housing deposit and surviving until my first paycheck, but I'll figure it out.

I just can't believe I'm going back to Japan.
I'm so unbelievably relieved and happy.
I have been dreaming about being in the JET Program since high school.
It's pretty much a dream come true.

So, I will try to keep up with this blog as much as possible, especially starting when I actually get there.

決まった。ジェットプログラムのALTの「短いリツト」に入れました。つまり、締め切りの前に全部の書類を出せばALTになります！やった！

けど書類は本当に多くて大変です。ｘ＿ｘ

月曜日はFBIのバックグラウンドチェックのために指紋押捺をしなくちゃいけません。肌荒れなどの問題がある人の話を聞いてちょっと緊張しています。プリントが完璧じゃなかったらFBIが使えないと聞きました。私の手の肌は完璧じゃないし．．．

ところで、よく聞かれますか、ジェットの求めた場所は愛知県（名古屋が大好きの理由で）と群馬県（友達が居て、東京の近くにあるの理由で）と広島県（歴史的なところの理由で）でした。しかし、求めたからそこに行くとは限りません。かなりランダムと聞いたけど。

でも今は貯金の問題をちょっと考えています。今の様子だと、アパートの家賃と生活費を払ったら初めての給料をもらうまで足りるかな。

日本へまた行くなんてまだ信じられない。
嬉しくてたまらない。
ジェットは高校生の時から私の夢だったよ。
